Stocco? Never heard of him.

I've thought about how Stocco will be remembered at Wisconsin before and now I'm curious what others think. John Stocco's career culminated in the 2007-2008 season when the Badgers won the Capital One Bowl against Arkansas. Not to besmirch that team and that bowl win, but I've always thought that Stocco was cheated out of his legacy at Wisconsin by the BCS limit on conference representation. He will be remembered as a great Badger quarterback, but he will probably never be lumped with Bevel or Bollinger because of the notoriety of his final bowl game. Let us hypothesize that Michigan loses another conference game in 2007 and the Badgers go to the Rose Bowl to play USC. As good as that Badger team was, they were likely incapable of defeating USC. Say what you will about USC, but under Pete Carrol they have always performed in the Rose Bowl, even in the loss to Texas in 2007.
So what is a better outcome for John Stocco's legacy, a win in the Capital One Bowl over Arkansas, or a loss to USC in the Rose Bowl?

Thanks for the responses so far. However, the comparison I'm suggesting is strictly between and Cap One win or a competitive Rose loss. I think it's safe to assume we'd all prefer a Rose win.

I think if wisconsin would of played usc in the rose bowl in 06 they would of won. wisconsin had the third best defense in the nation. but i think im glad they beat Arkansas instead cause i cant stand the sec. we made a statement beating Auburn and Arkansas that the big ten can hang with the speed of the sec

I dunno. It was a very good USC team, but the 1998 Badgers were called "the worst Big Ten Champion in a decade" when they went to the Rose Bowl and managed to beat UCLA. Someone should play College Game Day 2007 to figure this out.

By the way, I keep voting "Not sure Yet" about firing Bielema. A few more mediocre seasons, football players beating up their girlfriends, brawls etc will have to happen before I give a resounding YES. Well, unless several non-biased individuals witness Bielema staggering drunk in public.

I don't know about Stocco against USC, but I still think he was one of the gutsiest QB's to ever suit up in Camp Randall. I don't think he'll ever get his due; he certainly deserves it.
On another note, it would be great to have a site like this to bitch about/debate all sports in the state of Wisconsin; from the Badgers to the Brewers, Bucks. etc. That said, does anybody care as little about the Bucks as I do? I hope they go 0-82, and just leave the state. Good f**king riddance!

usc is always beatable. i think wisconsin would of had a chance to beat usc

im so tired of hearing this crap about the big ten not being able to hang with the speed of the sec. the big ten leads the overall series against the sec

Better not listen to that idiot Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio then. He's totally in love with the SEC and their "scholar" athletes!

Bollinger was not a good QB. I remember being in the college section during one of his games and everyone cheering that he sucks. Then his brother was down below and started yelling back at us. I thought he was going to cry. Bollinger was not a good QB, he was a good runner.

Hmmmmm - - - all your commenter are anonymous. Why is that? I don't mind putting my name to my thoughts.

What in the world - - - FIRE Bret Bielema? I don't think so. Have you so quickly forgotten his other seasons? Big Ten Coach of the Year his first season? His very creative use of the clock on punts at the end of the first quarter against the infamous Penn State game which WE WON btw and in which Joe Pa got his leg broken on the side line?

The problem this year is not Brett Bielema.

Bret didn't fumble one snap.

Bret didn't drop one catch.

Bret didn't get injured - - - not even a little bit.

Bret never threw one bad pass.

Bret never missed one tackle.

Bret never lost one yard.

And the list goes on - - - - -

Why don't we try being supportive, pulling for our Badgers even in this less than stellar season, and see what happens.

Still lovin' my Badgers AND their coach.

Nice coaching, Bret "Pinhead" Bielema. Enjoy your loss snatched from the jaws of victory.

After watching the Michigan State Game today I have to agree that the coach has to go at the end of this season. Friends, it's all about winning records and bowl appearances - two or three years of mediocrity and this team will harken back to the Badgers of the 1980's - remember losing by scores like 56 - 0? This team will lose all power to recruit.

BAD COACHING just cost us this game against Michigan State. Poor timeout usage, the spike at the end of the half, 20 yards in penalties in the coaching staff alone in the 4th quarter...the list goes on. something needs to change!

Bielema needs to go, he proved that he lacks even the simplest of football knowledge in the loss to Michigan St. We can blame poor coaching for our loses to Michigan and Michigan St. There is no excuse for burning a timeout with 12 seconds left. Either you burn it right away or you just let him kick it as time expires. Badger fans deserve better than the fucktard that is Bret Bielema

MSU 25...WI 24!

WHAT AN IDIOT!
FIRE THIS STUPID ASSHOLE NOW!

Still lovin your coach(es)? Leave Bielema and Christ in Michigan. Great game management, again! And where did the Badger team from the first half go when the second half started? Back to the same terrible play calling, poor special teams play, and game management thats been on display during the 4 game losing streak. About leaving your name.... how does leaving A NAME make your opinion more valid than anyone elses?

Wow..20 yards on the coach to help MSU get their last touchdown and then he calls time outs to help them set up their field goal.
I'm not color blind to red and green but Bielema had on the wrong color jacket.
FIRE HIM NOW BARRY...HIRE DAN MC PAST IOWA STATE COACH AND LET'S MOVE ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bielema is a damn Hawkeye send him back to the corn fields of Iowa after that Michigan State game today i am completely outraged...What a damn joke...I cannot believe a coach could blow a game so horribly. Not only did the coaching staff get a personal foul but we had over 100 yards in penalties. Especially a hold on 3 and 1 and then a false start. What a joke lack of discipline from a 38 year old coach who doesn't know what he is doing on the field. The team is undisciplined and unfit to play for the University of Wisconsin. Stocco he didn't make mistakes. Sheerer can't throw the ball 10 damn yards. He has embarassed the University as well as the fan base. While I still will watch next weekend I will hope we have an interim coach. What a joke, what a horrible team and what a pathetic coaching staff. They never even gave evridge a chance to throw a ball. Now Sheerer can't even throw an out ball he underthrows every pass that is outside. His arm is weak and so is Bielema. FIRE BIELEMA NOW FIRE BIELEMA NOW...we are an embarassment run by a undisciplined coach I hope either hes fired or we get wiped by Indiana!

F*** Bret Bielema.... He is a great individual - I have personally talked to him many times. On the other hand, he is a horrible, horrible coach. In college, you teach kids. They are not disciplined and keep making mistakes. That is the damn problem. Also, he is too much of a budy to his players becuase he is young - that is obvious. Let's see, a pathetic bowl game this year. Already 2 home losses in the same year. And worst of all, a possible non sellout for the 1st time in many many years. During the past 15 years, it didn't matter who we played, the game was sold out before the season ended. I am embarrased to be a badger right now and I have over $10,000 of memorabilia.

After the loss today at MSU, he needs to go. That was one of the worst coaching jobs that I have ever witnessed. A costly penalty on the sidelines? A timeout used with the Spartan FG unit rushing on to the field? Serve the win up on a platter....and better yet, make his job the dessert. We have a lot of talent on this sqaud, just not a lot of heart. That comes down to the indvidual holding the clipboard. He needs to go.

Nice fuckin' penalty Bielema, you dipshit! Gave another one away. Fire his ass already!!!!!!!

Also, why the hell cannot we not gain a fucking yard this year and 2nd and 1, 3rd and 1, etc. Oh when we do, there is a penalty. WOW!!

Barry, the natives are getting restless and soon the donations will stop. Whack that asshole!!! He is not Wisconsin!

If you support this coach, that is your choice. Just don't expect any football national championships for one of the country's best all around sports programs. I want to be the best and always be on the top - i.e. Ohio State. That will NEVER happen with Bret. I donate a hell of a lot of money to the badger fund and this is a disgrace.

No post after today's game? You must have fallen down and can't get up, Artful Badger.

Seriously... time-out?!?! He called time-out before that field goal? What was he thinking?!?! FIRE HIM, FIRE HIM, FIRE HIM!!!

Anonymous said...

If you want to support Bielema Fine, you hire him. Then we could all be happy.

Take that gay ass Iowa tattoo off your leg for faggot. Iowa is a joke of a college. If we keep Bret, who the hell knows what Wisconsin will turn into on Game Days.

This afternoons loss at Michigan State was unequivocally the result of absolutely horrible coaching on the part of Bret Bielema. After we go ahead by 11 points and we have the momentum easily on our side he gets a 5 yard penalty for a sideline infraction on the kickoff and then what does he do? He gets a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty for yelling at the refs about it. This gave MSU the ball on OUR 48 yard line and led to an easy touchdown. Then, when we have their kick team rushing onto the field, he decides to wait 15 seconds before calling a time out, and then uses his second one to try and ice the kicker. There are two options here: A. you let the time run out and make them rush or B. you call a timeout immediately and give your quarterback 30 seconds to work with. This was the absolute last thing you want to do. Then, add to that that you get over 100 yards of penalties (20 of which are Bielema's), and you account for a complete lack of discipline on the part of the coaching staff, which carries over to the players. His recruiting is mediocre at best (we were #41 in the country last year). This game was absolute garbage and Bielema has shown once again that he is not qualified to be a head coach at the Division 1 level. Who cares if he went 11-1 his first year, that was carryover from Barry Alvarez, Lloyd Carr won a national championship his first year and then steadily watched as Michigan fell out of any National significance, losing to OSU an insane 6 years in a row. If we want Badger football to have any sort of future, we need to take either an offensive or defensive coordinator who runs the spread from the SEC

Wanted: Head Coach that makes sound decisions, calls appropriate time outs, avoids sideline penalties, coaches strong fundamentals, and most importantly:
WINS GAMES.

SEE YA BRET.

Oh and Keetha, Bret actually did lose a yard. He actually lost us 20 when we had the game well within reach

Ptrain7 said...

Bielema could not be more of an idiot, he handed this game to Sparty WTF was that sideline penalty he took to give them great field position to get them back in the game. The instead of trying to pick up a first down and run out the clock the moron runs it up the middle. Then he tops it off with that timeout that allows Sparty to get set up for a field goal instead of letting them try it fire drill style. He has no judgment at all and should go back to being a defensive coordinator, somewhere far away from Wisconsin

I H8 Bret said...

Keetha, not very football literate, are you? No the coach doesn't do those things (except lose some yardage), but he "manages" and "teaches" the damn game. It is called discipline. Something you obviously don't have with your thoghts.

Keetha said...

Well Anonymous, my opinions about Brett are certainly different than yours, and you may call them undisciplined if you so wish, but as a person I'm disciplined enough and creative enough not to cuss online - - - or anywhere else for that matter.

Anonymous said...

nice call BRET!!!!!!!!!! way to stop the clock to allow Mich State to get organized to kick the winning FG. For being a defensive specialist why was that on the last few drives where MS drove all the way down field to score that it appeared we had no secondary on the field? Especially considering you knew they had to throw the ball?

12 Knots to Nowhere said...

Yeah, lets support a coach who is a known lush and carouses in the bars of Madison just like a kid with his first fake ID. Yup, a class act for the rest of us to swell our chests in pride.

Before everyone jumps off the deep end, we all know that the Badgers are always due for a stinker of a season---though probably not during a season that had such high expectations. But then again, we don't have a starting RB who was dogging it so he wouldn't get injured and ruin his NFL draft stock...

You kidding? You think that 2006 Badger team would have lost to USC in the 2007 Rose Bowl? Hell, Houston Nutt came up with a defense to shut down PJ Hill in the Cap One that no one else would have tried....8 men in the box and rushing at least 7 on every play...and Stocco picked it apart for the most part. Just two picks at the end of the 1st half cause Bielema to take his foot off the gas in the 2nd half. Pete Carroll never would have come up with such a defense and PJ Hill would have rushed for over 150 WITH Stocco having thrown for over 200 against USC.

I firmly believe that that 2006 BADGER team was good enough to beat Florida that year and have won the national title.

12 Knots to Nowhere said...

What was with the Bollinger comment? He was on the Vikings bench that year.

Anonymous said...

stocco was a good quarterback, too bad we couldn't have kept him here a couple more years we would be bcs champs!!!!!

Anonymous said...

If it weren't for the one loss in 2006 (think it was at Michigan in the Big Ten Opener, wasn't it?) The Badgers WOULD HAVE had the national title at the end of that season. They had the toughest D of the Big Ten that year and Stocco showed in the Cap One that if teams tried to take away PJ Hill, he could pick apart the secondary on quick-release throws. Badgers would have beaten Florida that year where Ohio State failed. Cap One game was not as close as final score...two picks at end of half (leading to 7 points) scared Bielema to go into a shell on offense for 2nd half and put the game in the very capable hands of the defense.

HAs anyone heard about Bielema being pulled of the bus on the way home from the Iowa game this year because he was beligerantly drunk?
