the good and the bad
Great game. While not as statistically dominant as the Indiana win, I believe this was definitely the best game of the season. With the exceptions of Barry's final win at home against Michigan and the 2003 win against Ohio State, this was the best football game I've watched in person. Unfortunately, the excitement from the win is tempered by Jefferson's injury. Anytime the ambulance pulls onto the field is a stark reminder of dangerous hits to the head and neck area can be. There was also a particularly dirty block in the back on a punt in the first half. I'm not sure how it would be implemented, but I would wholeheartedly support a rule, similar to hockey, that if you end another player's day with an illegal hit, you are out for the game as well. With any luck, Jefferson will be walking out of the hospital by 10 PM.

This was a quality win. Minnesota is a much better team than Indiana.
I enjoyed the passing.
Many will see this as a vindication of Bret's coaching -- I do not.
Many will see this as a vindication of UW's style of play -- okay, but let's keep "airing it out."
Many will shift blame to the players for the unnecessary losses to Mich., MSU, and OSU -- I do not.
Bottom line: Bret is here to stay. he is not a good coach. UW will remain a "throwback" to earlier days of football.
My personal "thanks" to the authors of this blog -- you improved the quality of coaching by putting Bret under scrutiny.
Actually, Wisconsin underwhelming then coming on late isn't too far off what we normally can expect from the Badgers.
I wonder if they will still keep scheduling cupcakes in the future.

I didnt think wisconsin was coming back being down 21-7 at halftime same with the the illinois game in 2006t when we were down 18 points at halftime and came back. but we are bowl eligable so im happy and we still have the axe
this win is big for bret bielema cause people will back off him a little bit, since he won toda and will probaly beat cal poly and has a chance to go 8-5 in a bowl game
Wisconsin is not a good football team. They remain undisciplined and poorly coached. Way too many mistakes.
While Bret may have bought himself some time with Minnesota falling apart, he remains a Division II coach overmatched in the Big Ten.
Dont forget the spread had Wisconsin by 13.
I agree about a rule change, why can't instant replay be used and if a hit is deemed to be illegal then the player is ejected from the game. Why do we only use instant replay for scoring disputes. Why can't each coach also call for review when they believe an illegal hit was used and then let the officials rethink rewarding the hit.
If the NCAA wanted to they could easily protect the players but do they really care, I don't think so!

So, UW goes 3-5 in conference and goes to a bowl because of the cupcakes. (We beat one conference team with a current winning record - ILL. 4-3.) Great???

Barry's support for Bret in the TV interview was lukewarm, but made me physically ill.
Noting Barry and Bret's arrogance made me puke. Neither wants it enough -- status quo is fine for them.
It would have been so easy for Bucky to be 10-1 or 9-2 or, dare I say, 11-0 (Penn State ain't that good).
Light moment: Did other people notice Bret counting his players on the field OUT LOUD???
Minnesota pretty much threw the game to Wisconsin; 18 gift points is hard to overcome and had it not been for that we'd be calling this a serious drubbing of the UW. There's still no sign of pass defense, and little sign of a pass offense (though Anderson was promising after a shaky start).
Special teams remain decidedly unspecial.
The bottom line is that either this team is poorly coached, or they don't have the talent to execute, and either way it reflects badly on Bret Bielummox and his overpaid and underachieving staff.
That this team is bowl-eligible is an indication of just how disgracefully low the bar is set.
the idea of the uw taking student season tickets away is awesome. if you dont show up on time then obviously you dont care about the game to much. and there is a waiting list to have season tickets so they should discontinue the students tickets that dont show up on time and give them to the general public that want to be there
I agree and i bet half the student section couldnt tell you what wisconsins record was in the past 3 seasons. get rid of half of the student section and turn into sections for people on the season ticket waiting list that actually care about the game and can show up on time
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA students are what make football games exciting. Get rid of them and college football loses alot of its luster, excitement, and fun. I cant even take that comment seriously.
Taking away part of the student section is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The students are what make the stadium what it is. Without the student section you take the energy right out of the stadium and obviously the old people who commented before don't understand this. The athletic department should stop worrying about when the students show up and worry about the product on the field. oh yeah and University of Wisconsin Badgers...not the old people in the stands badgers
if you take away student tickets they make more money cause students pay 20 bucks less then the general public. if they aint gonna show up on time then get rid of half of the student section and let the general public get those tickets.
there is people that tailgate 3-5 hours before the game starts and there is students that dont even show up til the second quarter. i think that goes to show you who cares about the game more and who deserves those tickets more.
simply, NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! Bret is too stupid to handle this wisconsin program, Wisconsin have been said as no.13 in the nation from the post season and now they are struggling with a team said as the worst Big Ten team in the post season. Why don't just put PJ Hill ruinning for the whole season like Javon Ringer and keep Clay away from the footabll. Bret you can't go away from the penalties you made his season. Bret can make a excuse on the qb and the best TE on the whole nation injured. Man, it will hard to choose between Shearer and Curt Phillps as the next year starting qb. Shearer is starting now and doing not a bad job BUT NOT A GOOD JOB! Curt Phillps may be Pryor in Wisconsin(He is a PR man in his high school!) Show great hands in high school and he is only sop.

It was fun listening to Fatass spin the reason why he picked Cal-Poly for this joke of a game. I don't give a big rat's ass that they were the best 1-AA (or whatever the hell they're calling it!) available. Uh, not up to the level of Va. Tech Bret buddy! Stop screwing the idiots that are still willing to pay to see these joke games.
there gonna have to start playing bcs conference teams in non conference games cause alot of season ticket holders are tired of it and are coming to the point were they might not renew their tickets. and you know the UW doesnt want that cause they love money especially barry alvarez the greediest person on earth
Unfortunately, the sheep WILL keep paying the big bucks for those games. I have no idea why. I didn't miss a game for close to 20years, but stopped going when the athletic dept. started sticking it up the ass of the paying customers. I'd much rather watch the games at the bar- don't have to fight the crowds (I think when they re-modeled the Camp, they narrowed the seats- or everybody's fatter than I thought!), and I don't have to wait in line for 10 minutes to pee. And I'm not lining St. Alvarez's bloated pockets!
The answer is obvious and it's right here in the athletic department.

Chance to go 8-5 with a win over Cal Poly? Freakin' Boise State can go 5-0 against IIA caliber teams like Cal Poly and Fresno State. We need BIG TEN wins to get legitimate bowls, not IIA wins to get toilet bowls. 3 wins in an eleven team conference STINKS. BIG TIME.

I've been a Badger fan for over 40 years, always pulling for them to win. But today against CAl Poly, I'm actually cheering for Cal Poly. I'm hoping they beat the Badger big-time so once and for all EVERYONE starts calling for Bret to be fired!

I'm quietly pulling for Cal Poly in this game because this may FINALLY bring attention the level of decline and the "trend" of downward football we've seen the last 18 games.
Ask any KC Chiefs fan about what happens when regimes don't change when it's time and they hang on too long...
That being said, it's now 20-14 and I don't see UW losing this one. Maybe the scare will do enough to wake people up.

This is a loss just as embarrassing as Michigan's loss to App. State. But at least App. State was genuinely a good team.
I was willing to give him one "off" season, after the success of his first year and a not-bad season last year. Today's game changed my mind; for Cal Poly to even be IN this game is a disgrace. I don't want to go back to the Morton era - Bielema needs to go.
