When you're a rising star, it's good to be paid like a star.

One word: flat. Again, the Badgers played a solid 1.93 quarters and then checked out. The differential in intensity was stunning. I hate how we crumble as soon as the game starts to slip away. At a minimum, I hope we learned something from this loss. I'll leave it to the professionals to break down the play-calling.
The game was over when FSU scored their third touchdown. Even when playing well, this Badger team is not built to overcome a deficit against a team that is not going to gift back the lead.
Player of the Game: Mickey Andrews
I realize ESPN could name Bowden's left shoe player-of-the-game if they wanted, but why not give the recognition and pride to a senior?

The quality of the officiating was arguably poor. In theory, some of the calls are the result of the pre-game confrontation at midfield. When that happens, it is not surprising that the officials are quick to throw flags for celebration and rouging the passer/kicker. No crew wants to be responsible for another Miami-Florida International debacle.

I thought it was bad when we lost to a pitiful Michigan team but what a wonderful end, BB has done a great job. I am sure we will recruit well in Florida now. We will be lucky to recruit in Wisconsin. Barry Fire BB now, it may already be too late!

BB and hi staff have decimated the UW Football program. I don't think this should be a hard decision for Barry. BB most go now.

Anonymous said...

It went exactly how I thought it would. 6 weeks of extra practice is not going to fix poor coaching and no quarterback. This loss was embarrassing. This team showed no heart. When Bielema got this job we were told what a great recruiter he is. I see a total lack of talent and ability. No playmakers. Hopefully Barry is more concerned with the program than with having to admit he was wrong and makes a change. If not I see another 7-5 season next year.

What a sad, sad ending to a sad, sad season.

All respect and pride gone -- OT vs. Cal Poly, the blown conference games, and now the blow-out by a mediocre Southern team.

The Wisconsin Football Program is shot for the next decade.

It's all on Bret -- but it is all gone.

12 Knots to Nowhere said...

I wouldn't say Florida State is mediocre. They spent most of the season trying to establish the quarterback position on the team. By the fact they bring in that Florida talent, they are already heads above most team in the country.

The real lesson here, and which seems to be lost on a lot of people bemoaning recruiting at Wisconsin is that step between a talented high school recruit and proficient football player on the field on Saturdays.

But what I really wonder is, even with the on field production worsening, has the staff and Athletic Department made greater strides to make sure players actually take advantage of the eduction offered and graduate from Wisconsin?

That said, Wisconsin is actually better than most D-I or FCS when it comes to graduating players.

gaffy said...

Okay, FSU beat the then-rated 25th Turtles of Maryland. And I like watching them. ACC was whacky this year.

Wisconsin does a good job of graduating its student-athletes, compared to most other schools at its level. But, all things are relative.

Really, college football players should be paid for their services.

I know, let's pay the players out with Bret's check. lol.

UW Alum and booster, but not for long said...

So awesome to be embarrassed yet once again on national TV. How in the hell can UW recruit a quarterback now? What quarterback of any talent is gonna wanna hand the ball off 2 out of every 3 plays, just because "that's wisconsin football"???

Fire Bret Beilema, fire his entire coaching staff, and get rid of Barry Alverez as AD. If you want more of this year after year, keep BB and AD runnin the show. But be prepared to be average at best, and at the end of the year, be prepared to get your ass handed to you in a bullshit bowl game.

Living in the state of Florida with a SEC wife makes watching a Badger football team coached by a swell guy, hard to stomach.
Brett should find a charity to work for and quietly quit the university,
when the roughing the kicker call was made why wasn't Brett in the linesman's face telling him what he thought!!!
Because Mr. Niceguy wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feellings.
what a shame!!
we need a quarterback and Brett is playing footsie with 2 losers.
These guys suck and if you mdonn't get a real quarterback then you can get used to 1978-1982 (my years at Madison) type seasons when we cheerred the band.
Time for a change!!!
The out of state alumni are ashamed to show there colors.
Forget a firing!!!
Brett should quit and beg forgiveness.

Here is the spiral that has begun.... An embarrassing season - how does that help recruiting? An embarrassing end-of-season loss with poor coaching (again) - how does that help recruiting. Bret is officially NOW on the proverbial HOT SEAT. Every publication in the nation will list him on their WATCH list - how does that help recruiting? The guy already spends more time partying and puking than recruiting.... So how does this help Wisconsin? FIRE BRET NOW!

I'm sick and tired of the unsubstantiated rumors being floated around by supposed Badger fans about coach Bielama. These ugly rumors have run the gamut from inappropriate under the table grabbing, to propositioning coed age women, to having a laison with an area golf course bartender who is a coed, to being passed out in the men's room of a Verona Rd. dance hall, pictures being taken, cameras confiscated or pictures deleted of this "alleged" incident. I'm sick of it, and I wish it would stop. We true Badger fans know the truth, and that is our coach would not be involved in things like that. When BA was deciding whether or not to leave the Badgers my guess is he was paid a visit by the chancellor and the AD and he was promised that he would be the AD when he quit coaching, and that he could appoint his successor, which he did in BB. Then after the appointment, some on the Athletic Board questioned why they were totally bypassed and why no national search was made for this desirable and high profile job! One professor even quit in protest! What kind of loyalty is that? Because of this we should be supporting BB as loyal Badger fans, not undermining BB and the program.
If there were anything to any of these alleged "behavior" incidents I'm sure our local press would have addressed the issue, which they have not, so it's pretty obvious there's no truth to those rumors.

Toad said...

That is because the 'local' press is home and nightie-night when Bret is puking in the bathroom stalls - surrounded by his "body guards".... Do you think Tom Oates or Mike Lucas or Baggot or Murphy or Heller are out at Midnight trying to hunt down BB??

Your post is just another Badger fan with their head where the sun doesn't shine. But I digress - look at the product on the field, and tell us that this is the product of a coach centered and focused on coaching and preparation? He is either not focused, or horrible at coaching... In either case, he should be fired.

It will only get worse from here. Alvarez won't fire Bielema. He will watch him run the program into the ground before he does anything. One can only speculate how long it will take to come back from the damage Bielema and his staff have done. Badger fans can look forward to a continued slide in recruiting and more incompetent coaching manifested on the field by QB's who have not been coached up and are in over their heads, receivers who are not capable of running routes and making plays, offenses that are one dimensional and impotent, defenses that are prone to numerous bonehead mistakes and giving up big plays, especially on third down. Within two years, Wisconsin football will be back to being the doormat of the Big Ten as it was in the pre-Alvarez era. We can expect more ESPN commentators who will continue to sneer at and denigrate Wisconsin football, further damaging recruiting and the program's image. To think that we once thought we could be national title contenders and now to have come to this, so quickly. What a shame, what an embarrassment! May God have mercy on the Badgers!

David Miller said...

There was a sequence in the second or third quarter where the lack of coaching had me yelling at the TV...

P.J. Hill runs for thirty yards or so and he's obviously gassed, but we leave him in the game. On the ensuing first down we give him the ball again and he loses two yards running around left end. On the next play we substitue John Clay for Hill. Why on earth didn't the coaches either substitute Clay on first down or give the ball to someone other than Hill? That is illustrative of the kind of play calling and dubious coaching decisions that have plagued this program this season.

By the way, who wants to watch a Wisconsin team quarterbacked by Dustin Scherer for 12 games in 2009? God help the Badgers!

Anonymous said...

The Badgers and Bielema are an embarrassment to the Big Ten. This should bring Bielama's intolerable arrogance down a few notches

Anonymous said...

Brett Bilema and is sorry ass high school coaching staff needs to go. Bilema have successfully destroyed what we have built in Madison. It took decades to build this program and this clown Bilema destroyed it in three seasons. He cannnot coach or recruit, he has no purpose. I willn still giving my money to Wisconsin, because it might trickle down to the athletic department and Bilema. Barry needs to admit his mistake and fire the clown before he put us in a hole we could never dig out of.

Anonymous said...

Get rid of this guy -- now. This progam will play to thousands of empty seats next year, and money is the bottom line. I have made my last donation to this athletic program until he goes.

regarding that last post. meant to say i will no longer be giving my money to the school until Bilema is gone. THEY CAN GO GET IT FROM THEIR OTHER ALUMNI'S. I QUIT!

As an Iowa Hawkeye(and Big Ten) fan I watched and cheered for the Badgers yesterday. Wow, what an ass kickin' they endured. My problem with Bielema began when Iowa beat the Badgers, Bielema gave NO credit to the fact that Iowa played well. I guess that's the arrogance you all are talking about. You all deserve better than you're getting. The Hawks have had their own problems over the years, and this is a Badger blog.

badger fan said...

fire paul chryst... I think that you absolutely can hold him accountable for the offensive anemia that our badgers displayed throughout the season.

BA must give bielema at least 2 more years. I do not often agree with lou holtz on espn, but when it comes to the joke of a coaching carousel that CFB has become, you need to give your guy a chance with his players and his system.

That being said, I say this for 2 reasons:
1) It is very clear that BA will not fire bielema this year, he will be around at least 09-(10? if a miracle happens and we make a new-year's bowl)
2) If bb feels his job is in jeopardy, he wont risk his year in the hotseat by linking his fate to a guy like Curt Phillips. Without the security of a second year, it will undoubtedly be sherer starting come next august 30th.

As much as I would love to see a guy like Tommy bowden from clemson, Leach from TT (the yin to alvarez's yang), or (who I think would be a perfect fit for the program, Tommy Tuberville)-- none of whom UW could ever afford/ want to come to madison unless the boosters really wanna step it up-- bret bielema is going to be coaching for at least two more years, and thats just kind of the reality of the situation.

I do not want to see a rash decision that sends us backwards even farther. Dont get me wrong, I miss the glory days of rosebowls and ron- daynes, but it is not like BA never had bad seasons. I also do not believe that he is hands-off behind the scenes. I believe BA loves UW football to much to let bret destroy his legacy. BA built it, BA knows UW football, so I think if things were really dire he would pull the plug.

Anonymous said...

I think Barry loves himself first and foremost. Therefore he cannot admit to a mistake like the one everyone else is seeing. I thought Phillips was the stud QB we have been waiting for. Is that not the case? I just assumed that they wanted to save his four years and use the older guys this year.

In any case no coaching change will be made until the alumni moneyflows change course. Even BA will swallow his pride if that happens.

Anonymous said...

As a Badger fan living in Arizona it is difficult to defend a team when the coach doesn't understand the game. I find it truly amazing that BB still stands on the sideline and that BA is still defending his "golden child". How far do we have to slide before enough is enough. If BA can't see that BB needs to go then he should follow him out the door.

There's nothing wrong with Wisconsin football that better recruiting, better players, better coaching, better athletic department personnel, and better luck can't fix.

The physical plant facilities are just fine.

I'm a Seminole fan who watched this game in extreme anxiety for the first half. This game was just like the BC and Georgia Tech games in which powerful O lines ran over the lighter Nole defenders. I cannot believe that BB couldn't take advantage of this huge inequity. If you had a quarterback with intermediate skills and some better play calling you might have won.

Somebody posted - "it is too bad that only 3,000 to 4,000 fans showed up" for the Chump Sports Bowl. HUH? You ain't seen nuthin' yet. The Badgers WILL only win 3-4 games in 2009.... THANKFULLY, we have WOFFORD on the schedule !!

Also, as for all of the posts about Curt Phillips. Did you see how BAD SCHERER IS?? Did you see how BAD EVRIDGE WAS??? Wisconsin was ranked in the Top 10 with a favorable schedule. If Phillips had ONE OUNCE of talent, he would have been playing as a Freshman, just like Ohio State did with Pryor....

OR.... was that ANOTHER BIELEMA MISTAKE??

Fixed Carbon said...

Your site is listed on some Seminole websites and you might get more of us weighing in. A Seminole fan like Karin, above, I was peeing in my pants that first half and can't believe that FSU won. Alvarez is now roughly in the stage of denial about his abysmal choice of Bret B that Bobby Bowden was in about 2004 when the Seminoles were circling down the toilet under the direction of Bobby's son, Jeff Bowden. (Offensive Coordinator). We even had a series of "fire Jeff Bowden" websites. Good luck, you will need it (and you will need many millions to get rid of Bielema and hire a better coach).

PULL THE TRIGGER said...

A lot of people seem to comment about whether UW can afford to fire Bielema....

The real question: CAN THEY AFFORD NOT TO?

The future of this team is abysmal, and won't get better for a long time! (unless, BIELEMA is fired)

badger fan said...

I think it is a reasonable question to ask:

Who could the badgers bring in to fill the vacancy that pretty much everyone here is proposing to create?

Any replacement is going to be extremely risky because the UW athletic dept cannot afford to execute the kind of coup d'etat that it would take to get any kind of noticeable step up. UW just isn't going to be picking up the football version of tubby smith and the gophers anytime soon.

SO who is out there?

Rich rod is going to be on the market soon lol, just give him another year. Michigan boosters are far more impatient-- espescially with their new Uber-Bighouse. Would UW be willing to take a chance on the spread offense with a guy like RR?

Or would we stick with the run-happy mode of doing things? Who is out there that could pound the ball AND manage a respectable passing game? I can think of several great coaches out there, I just donnot understand the apeal of anyof them having to work out of alveraz's meddling and long shadow-- it would be the college football version of the cowboys with wade phillips and jerry jones-- I like the idea of a guy like Tuberville. I think that he is a good fit. Hell, Leach was considering going to Washington for a little while there... Its not like UWashington is a bona-fide football powerhouse and they nearly landed texas techs offensive guru.

What about some washed up NFL head coach... Herman Edwards is probably going to be looking for work.

Then again, why doesn't everyone on this blog consider how badly a guy like Charlie Weis bombed. Willingham doesn't look so bad by comparison.

Its really easy to point fingers, and I found myself doing that too, but I am wary of a costly but lateral move in coaching. It needs to be a considerable step up over BB to be worth it. I would be wary of pulling a minnesota and firing consistent guy like mason for a hot-shot like brewster.

I hate to say it, but I do not believe I will ever see the day of a UW football national title. Madison just does not compare to the weather of the SEC, the lifestyles of USC, or the traditions of ND, OSU, or MICH in the North. Madtown and camp randall are epic locales, and anyone who has ever experienced badger football knows that, but you just arent going to get the top, blue-chip type recruits.

That said, winning begets more winning, and establishes itself as a mode of operation for an entire program. Anyone who has ever been to columbus knows its just as cold and 10x as crappy as madison, but the OSU brand is still outstanding in college football because of tressel. Part of it is the storied tradition, but the gophers once had that too and blew it.

So I buy into the importance of a coach, but I do not buy into the coaching-change-at-all-costs mentality displayed here. Only get rid of BB if there is a considerable step up waiting to replace him.

Thoughts on who that might be?

Ten Reasons why Bret Bielema Should Get fired.

1. He never has any big wins on the Road. Can you name a time when Bret Bielema beat Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, or Michigan State on the road? Thats right 0. This year against big ten Teams he was 1-3 on the Roads, with the lonely victory at horrible Indiana.

2. He got left with a great team. People can't compare his first 3 teams to BA's first 3, because Bielema was left with talent. He was left with a great offensive line, a really talented defense, great running backs, 2 great tight ends, and great kickers and punters. All he had to do was find a QB who could manage a game.

3. His record continues to decrease as the team becomes a team of all of the players he recruited. He is a horrible recruiter. Look at the top Rivals 100 this year. ZERO PLAYERS are going to Wisconsin. The only players he ever gets that are top recruits are from Wisconsin.

4. What big wins has he ever had? Maybe Michigan last year. AND THATS IT. The non-conference schedule sucks. He has a good winning percentage because of the crappy teams we play in non-conference like: Akron, Citadel, Marshall, Bowling Green, Washington State.and you probably are going to say "well he cant control the schedule" The team plays horrible in these games. They never blow a team out and play 4 QUARTER FOOTBALL.

5. His play calling and decisions in tight games. Lets see, he single handedly lost the Michigan State Game. His team LOOKED HORRIBLE against Iowa, Penn State, and Florida State. He doesn't know how to use PJ Hill and John Clay. When one has a big run, take them out to get some rest. In the FSU game, PJ had a great run and was clearly tired. But he ran with him again the next play. DUMB

6. Quarterback. He doesn't understand how to develop a quarterbook. If you look at all the greats: Bradford, Pryor, McCoy, Tebow, they all start young and learn how to be great quarterbacks and DEVELOP. We got Curt Phillips, a great recruit. Why don't we start him and NOT A SENIOR "LEADER" if we are going to get blown out in big games. Paul Chryst sucks. He needs to go.

7. His staff. His staff sucks! Paul Chryst is a horrible offensive coordinator. Anyone could tell the team to play "Wisconsin Football" That reverse with Gilreath is so obvious. Dave Dorrien. Sucks. The defense was really talented with great d-line, good linebackers, and some good corners like Langford. We let up over 30 points 5 TIMES THIS YEAR. HORRIBLE.
And special teams don't even go there.

8. Michigan Game. We were up 19-0. We are one of the three wins they have. Coaches don't let 19-0 leads at half to one of the worst teams in College Football go away. 5 TURNOVERS, ARE YOU KIDDING ME.

9. 2 WEEKS. REMEMBER THESE 2 WORDS: 2 WEEKS. Don't blame it on the players. I repeat DONT BlAME IT ON THE PLAYERS. The losses reflect on the head coach and how badly he prepares for games. He had 2 WEEKS TO SALVAGE THE SEASON. AND HE LOST 42-13 against FSU. He had 2 WEEKS TO PREPARE FOR MICHIGAN.

10. Cal-Poly. Enough said.

Replacements. Ahh yess. I have 3 replacements for him that will do a much better job as a coach. You stink Bielema. You are bringing a great program down the drain and we have 0 Big Ten Titles, Lost 2 straight Bowl Games, and YOU LOSE CONTINUE TO LOSE ON THE ROAD AND NEVER EVER EVER WIN BIG GAMES.

1. Tommy Tuberville- I know he didnt have a good season but he did take his team to the National Championship 3 years ago.

2. Herman Edwards- he can be a strict coach like Alvarez was and hard on the players. Bielema stinks at this.

3. What about Nick Holt? USC Defensive Coordinator. Worth a Shot.

Barry, you need to make a change. This program is going downhill and you're the only person that can save it by firing BB.

BadgerBro123 said...

Can it get more embarassing for us? We lost by 29 points, the most out of any bowl game so far. You are right most of the reasons are legit. Bret Bielema, you had 2 weeks to prepare that game. You clearly didn't prepare your team just like in other games. We should of lost to Cal-Poly, then we wouldn't have to get embarassed ONCE AGAIN ON ESPN. And please, do not wear that stupid wind breaker.

I'll give you a guarantee. Barry (and other coaches) always said - the key to a successful season is not your "next" recruiting class, but the one that is 2 years away. That is when you enjoy the fruit of your success.

Well guess what? 2 years after BRET's AWESOME SEASON, he is about to deliver one of the WORST recruiting classes in recent history. It won't be in the top 5 or 6 of the BIG TEN - let alone anywhere near the top 25 in the nation!!!!

His star of the recruiting class is a QB with a broken arm, that is under 6 feet tall.... Niiiiice.....

Here is your guarantee - 4 wins next year. And further downhill after that....

I vote Mike Riley.

hey i like that. in fact, i had a couple of new year's cards laying around nad I did send one. Barry should get a kick out ofthat, and maybe enough letters will get him to open his eyes. For those who want to make excuses for Bret, the difference between barry getting a break during losing seasons and not Bret, is the fact that Barry actually won something in his career and was a proven commodity. Bret is a hack, arrogant, and in way over his head. Barry should take a lesson from Pat Richter and what he did with Stan VAn Gundy and then Brad Soderberg. They weren't ready, and Pat pulled the plug for a better coach. He put his ego aside, and put the UW first!

Anonymous said...

Yes, it's obvious that BB is not getting it done. The talent within the program has continued to slide and I think it started before Barry left. Skilled offensive players (QB's especially) are not giving Bucky a 2nd look. Defensive talent is also greatly lacking, no speed at LB, poor tackling and gap control.

Anonymous said...

Those "rumors" of BB have some merit to them. Maybe not all of them are true but i have seen him in local downtown bars picking up college girls. He went up to one of my friends, who was on crutches mind you, and straight up asked her if she would like to go home with him. He also told her not to worry about a ride because she would have a paid cab ride in the morning. Hey we at least have to give him props for offering to pay for the ride home.

Also i found the two "randomly picked" seniors for the bowl trip paid for by BB were two blonde girls. THe comments made in the student section at the basketball game were quite hilarious after that.

The performance standards for our great alma mater are just plummeting. Who could not get to a bowl game with this year's schedule? What kind of bonuses do other coaches get who actually do a great coaching job, i.e. Mark Johnson, Bo Ryan, the men's track and cross country coaches, etc.

good news, at least to many of us...

this is from an e-mail forwarded to me by my buddy who works for the badger sports report (coaches show):

"I spoke to [removed] this week who crossed paths with Barry after the bowl game and he said his face was bright red with him muttering how "unacceptable this performance was" and how "the coaches never gave these kids a chance" to win. Looks like Bret's leash may be shrinking."

point is, i think barry gets it. we can't expect him to show anything but confidence in bret publicly. the slightest sign of doubt from an AD about his head coach would set off a media frenzy and negatively impact recruiting and team morale. but you have to figure that privately he is more than a little disturbed about what's gone on this season.

Just read in today's Wis State Journal where Bret says no assistants needed. I like loyalty, but I like quality product better. Next year we will win 3-4 games.

Its all about the money. As long as the football program is successful financially BA will not fire BB. Remember BB was his hand picked successor. When contributions and revenue decline BA's job will be on the line and he will have to make a move with BB. Until then we are going to be served the same crap year after year. BB may make some token moves with assistant coaches to take the heat off of him.

BB's off field antics are an embarassment to the University. I am tired of BA's attitude that the program is succesful with a 7-5 record on the basis of beating 4 weak non-conference opponents and getting a berth in one of the "junk" bowl games each year.

We need a real professional head coach and an athletic director who will stop accepting mediocrity.

Where is the Board and Chancellor on these issues? Are they asleep at the switch?

Mr Ego will not fire bb cause it would make him look bad. This team never got better and got embarrassed by FSU.

"The contract's pay adjustment reflects Bret's sound and strong leadership of our football program". "He's been recognized nationally for his remarkable first-year (yeah that's right FIRST year) achievements (even though the players were from the Barry A. show). The package provides him compensation more in line with the market forces at work in college football", says Chancellor John D. Wiley in 2007.

"Bret had a terrific first season, one that made us the envy of many universities nationally." "He did it through hard work, by setting high standards on the field and in the classroom and by refusing to compromise on his values," states Barry Alvarez in 2007.

"We recognize his commitment to Wisconsin," Dickey says. "Bret has represented the university selflessly in his many interactions with the public and has kept the Badgers in the forefront of college football," states Walter Dickey in 2007.

I did not make this up.
Who writes this shit for these guys?

Who writes this shit for them?

can BB declare himself draft eligible and follow PJ's lead, I do not think another year of coaching in college is going to hone his craft anymore than it is going to make PJ faster or less injury prone

The season can be summed up as follows:

The season ticket holders paid Ruth's Chris Steakhouse prices for Dollar Menu cheeseburgers.
