Bielema just doesn't cut it. What we see on the score board is evidence of not making current performance through play calls, player slotting, and use of current assets. But the real damage is that these underlying assets still have some Barry in the mix. The more we let Bielema continue, the deeper the serious damage. A classic case of promoting to a level they aren't ready for; Barry is an AD who was a great coach but set himself up to fail by so strongly endorsing Bielema that he can back down and take action himself. My point is just that the problem is systemic and that it isn't fair to single out Bielema's salary as a reason for criticism: coaches in all college sports at a wide variety of institutions are overpaid. But because of the market for coaching salaries, you simply can't pay a coach what you can pay a junior professor of English Lit. <BR/><BR/>Does that represent skewed values? Yes. But the market represents skewed values all over the place. I would love nothing more than for huge donations to be made for the hiring of junior professors and the retention of academic stars. As a young academic, it would help me personally quite a bit.<BR/><BR/>Expectations and accountability for job performance are one thing and salary is another. (last ticket I had as an undergrad for the student section was $14) I've lived in one of the most expensive countries in the world and the tickets for baseball games here have been pretty consistent (well, along with the consistent mediocrity, but Japanese baseball is more of an excuse to drink beer and sing songs) <BR/><BR/>Although the athletic department is self sufficient, it really looked bad when there were huge budget cuts for academics at one point and they were completing a $107 million dollar renovation at Camp Randall. Nevermind the money donated by "philanthropists" could have either gone to the academic programs at UW or to other universities with meager endowments. <BR/><BR/>Lastly, by the fact he makes $1.4 million a year makes him a legitimate target, because by making that kind of money, it is implied that you will deliver a quality product. Several coaches in football get fired for not producing despite their hefty price tags. <BR/><BR/>Oh, and in case anyone wonders...whenever anyone outside of the US asks me about my alma mater, the response about Wisconsin is "it is a very good school" not "wow, good football program." First, most of the money that pays college coaches comes from booster donations to the athletic department. It doesn't come out of the general operating budget and it isn't clear that donors who make their donations to the AD would make those same donations to pay for new physics and history professors.
